A later generation of 20th century drill presses were provided a quill with a "slot" such that the drift for extraction of the morse taper could be applied at only certain points in the rotation, and with the quill "down." It was a logical design which did away with overhang of the spindle.

I've thought of modifying my "Excelsior" so that it embodies the later design. But add that to the list of projects undone.

Belt tensioning on both the WPI and Excelsior machines is by "cut & glue." Some of the later WPI DPs had a sort of handwheel which lowered the cone pulley, much as your screw thread does. I think Francis Reed used adjustment at the upper right angle idler pulleys also, maybe on an eccentric? I think MarcD mentioned that.

In moving my machines around, I've often thought of how fragile that trumpet shaped base casting might be. And yet I've never seen one broken.

I said I had the overhead countershaft for the WPI drill press. That is true but it is only in "parts." I've never seen the complete countershaft including it's belt shifter arrangement. That was until I went to Bernardston, MA Antique Engine Show this spring. Lo and behold there is someone operating a woodworking lathe driven by the duplicate of the overhead works. It was not what I expected. I seem to remember it included a handle which came down to the operator's reach: he was to give it a "quarter turn" to do the shifting and start the drill press.

But I got pix. Somewhere.
